About
I have taught and supported learners from school age to undergraduate and adult level through one-to-one tutoring, lecturing, mentoring and specialist training.
My approach is calm, clear and encouraging. I try to understand not only what a student is finding difficult, but why — whether there is a gap in earlier knowledge, uncertainty about how to approach problems, or simply a loss of confidence.
From there, we can break difficult ideas into manageable steps, strengthen understanding and help the student become increasingly confident and independent. My wider background in scientific research and software engineering also gives me a strong practical grounding in analytical thinking and problem-solving.
Tutoring
I work with students who need to rebuild confidence and strengthen the fundamentals, as well as high-attaining students looking for greater depth, challenge and the highest grades.
Strengthen the fundamentals, tackle difficult topics and build the confidence and exam technique needed to make steady progress. Lessons can be adapted to the areas where support will make the greatest difference.
Develop deeper understanding, stronger mathematical technique and a more systematic approach to challenging problems, with clear explanations and focused exam preparation.
For students who want greater depth and challenge, I can also support more advanced work in Physics and Mathematics, including Astronomy, Astrophysics, Mechanics and quantitative problem-solving.
Teaching approach
Students can find Physics and Mathematics difficult for very different reasons. Sometimes an earlier gap in understanding causes problems later on. Sometimes the concepts make sense but applying them to questions does not. Sometimes confidence has simply taken a knock.
I adapt sessions to the individual student and work through ideas and problems step by step, with an emphasis on understanding why something works rather than simply memorising a method.
A typical session begins by looking at the student’s current topic or difficulty and identifying any gaps in understanding. We then work through explanations, examples and questions together, gradually placing more emphasis on the student solving problems independently.
Where useful, I can also help with revision planning, exam technique and structuring practice between sessions. The aim is to improve performance while building confidence and independence.
Simple to arrange
Let me know the student’s level, current topics and anything they are finding particularly difficult.
Select a suitable lesson and an available time through the online booking calendar.
The lesson can then be tailored to the student’s needs, from rebuilding foundations to exam preparation or greater challenge.
Booking
Choose a lesson type and an available time using the booking calendar. I offer one-to-one tuition online and, depending on location and timing, in person in and around Cambridge.
Regular weekly tuition is welcome, as is more focused support with revision, exam preparation or particular difficult topics.
